Have you ever googled ‘cheesy beans on toast’? There are, what, a million recipes. I’m pretty happy to have a debate about what makes the perfect cheesy beans on toast in the comfort of my own home, but do there need to be pages and pages online dedicated to it? I would have been outraged at such an exorbitant waste of time a week ago.
But at the time, I had yet to visit Cosy Club in Basingstoke.
Located in Festival Place, yards from the cinema, Cosy Club’s soothing décor is the perfect place to enjoy a meal with the family. We popped in for breakfast, and although Cosy Club can’t guarantee that any item is completely gluten-free due to their busy kitchens, we were pretty confident they could conjure up cheesy beans on toast for our five-year-old daughter with coeliac disease.
While I whack a cow-full of cheese on top of my beans to slowly melt while I’m savouring every mouthful, the other half wants a sprinkling mixed in before the beans go on the toast. I didn’t think there was any other way of doing it. What a fool I’ve been.
Served on delightful gluten-free golden linseed loaf from the Incredible Baking Company (we asked), the cheese was first grilled, with beans dumped on top. A big fan of cheese on toast, I’ve never considered doing it this way, and while it might make me a bit simple, the sight of such an uncomplicated dish blew my mind. Ridiculous, right?
Anyway, the gluten-packed full English breakfasts were a joy, and both children demolished their toast in minutes, with the eldest – our gluten-free girl – wanting more. What more can you ask for? Well-informed staff, for one, and that’s what we got. Three staff members attended our table, all clued up, but only the manager took the order, delivering it to our table with the self-respecting red flag proudly upright.
With no poorly tummy or sickness afterward, this was, all in all, a success, and it gives us the confidence to visit Cosy Club in the near future for lunch or dinner. It is highly recommended.
